What can a ComfyUI PNG contain?
A PNG saved by ComfyUI can carry more than the visible picture. Its text chunks may include a prompt execution graph and a workflow graph with editor information. Depending on the nodes and export settings, these records can include prompt text, checkpoint names, seeds and sampler settings.
Not every image contains these fields. Custom save nodes, disabled metadata and later exports can change what is stored. Inspect the actual delivery file rather than inferring its contents from a filename.
Remove the embedded workflow in four steps
- Keep an original. Save the source PNG and a separate workflow JSON if you need to reproduce or edit the generation later.
- Inspect the delivery copy. Open the free image metadata remover, add the PNG and click its status badge to see the detected fields.
- Choose Remove metadata. The cleaner removes PNG text chunks as part of its broader metadata cleanup. It does not offer a workflow-only mode.
- Download and check again. Download the result, clear the workspace, then add the downloaded file and review its metadata details.
Which fields should disappear?
This is an illustrative checklist, not a scan of your file:
| PNG text field | Possible contents | What to check after cleaning |
|---|---|---|
prompt | Execution nodes, inputs and generation settings | The original text chunk is absent |
workflow | Editor graph and node configuration | The original text chunk is absent |
| Other text fields | Comments or tool-specific records | Review every reported field |
For a second check on your own computer, ExifTool can list available fields with exiftool -a -G1 -s cleaned.png. File dimensions and format information may remain; those are not embedded workflow instructions.
Will cleaning change the picture or file type?
For an ordinary ComfyUI PNG, this tool removes supported metadata chunks while retaining the encoded image data and PNG format. Choose metadata removal without cropping to avoid resizing or a crop export. Cleaning also removes other text records and supported EXIF, XMP and C2PA data; keep a master if any of those records matter.
A PNG that additionally contains a supported NovelAI Alpha-channel payload takes a different cleanup path that rebuilds the Alpha low bits. See the NovelAI removal guide for that distinction.
Common questions
Can someone load the cleaned PNG as my original workflow?
Removing the embedded graph prevents recovery from those removed chunks. It does not delete JSON files, previously shared originals or copies held elsewhere.
Does changing the filename remove the workflow?
No. Renaming a file changes its name, not the PNG text chunks inside it.
Does a clean scan prove the image was not AI-generated?
No. It reports the supported markers readable from that copy. Visual content, other watermarks and external records are separate.
