How to remove C2PA metadata from an image

  1. Add the original file and click its status badge to review reported metadata.
  2. Look for an embedded C2PA or JUMBF record. A record being present does not by itself prove AI generation.
  3. Select Remove metadata and download the new file. This is a broad cleanup that also removes other supported metadata, rather than a C2PA-only switch.
  4. Clear the workspace and add the downloaded copy. Confirm the previously reported embedded record is no longer shown, then check the image visually.

What are C2PA Content Credentials?

Content Credentials describe a file's provenance using signed records. They can record creation and editing actions, including AI-related actions when supplied by the creator tool. They are not the same as an invisible watermark encoded in image pixels.

This scanner reports supported embedded containers; it does not cryptographically validate a credential or its signer. Removing a container from a delivery copy does not erase external manifests or records stored elsewhere.

Supported image containers

FormatEmbedded record targetedCleanup behavior
JPEG / JPGAPP11 / JUMBF segmentsRemoves supported header metadata; copies encoded image data
PNGcaBX chunkRemoves credential and text chunks; retains normal image chunks
WebPC2PA RIFF chunkRemoves the chunk and updates the container size

Direct HEIC, PDF and video files are outside this image tool's scope. A PNG containing supported NovelAI hidden data follows the Alpha-channel cleanup path described in the NovelAI guide.

What will stay or change?

Ordinary metadata removal avoids cropping and resizing. Metadata can include orientation or display-related information, so compare the downloaded image with the original before sharing it. If you choose cropping, that is a separate canvas export with its own format and size rules.

Keep an untouched original when you need authorship, licensing or editing records. The cleaner removes supported records from a new file; it does not rewrite them to assert a different origin.

Frequently asked questions

Does removing C2PA remove SynthID?

No. SynthID is an image-content watermark. This C2PA cleanup targets embedded metadata containers and does not detect or remove SynthID.

Will Instagram or another platform stop displaying an AI label?

There is no guarantee. Removing supported metadata changes the file you upload, while platform labels and other detection signals are separate.

Can I clean multiple images?

Yes. Add multiple files, select them, remove metadata and download the results. Files are processed locally.

Why did the original have no C2PA record?

Some files never had an embedded credential; others were exported without it. Absence of a supported record does not establish whether AI was used.
